听Q: What鈥檚 one lesson you鈥檝e learned or piece of advice that you hope to pass on to the next generation of women leaders?听

A: Be true to yourself, and do not let external pressures change who you are or dictate your path.听 You may encounter cultural norms and expectations to be or act a certain way, especially when you are the only woman in the room. Be confident knowing you are there because you bring a different perspective, and this variety of viewpoints is required to solve the hardest problems and tackle the best of challenges. A: Leaders have a great opportunity and responsibility to recognize and empower women in their organizations. This can take many forms, such as mentorship through guidance, support and advice; sponsorship and access by advocating for high-visibility roles; and fostering a supportive environment where all voices and experiences are heard and considered when making decisions. But most importantly, leaders need to inspire all women by acknowledging their achievements in the organization as well as highlighting their contributions and successes to the business.听

Q: Reflecting on past roles/experiences, is there a female leader or mentor who has had an impact on your career, and why?听

A: Absolutely, there have been many over the course of my 30-year career. Perhaps most notably, I had the opportunity to work for a true trailblazer in our industry, . Linda started her 40+ year career at General Dynamics as a software engineer and retired from Lockheed Martin as the Executive Vice President of Information Systems and Global Services business area, a $10B+ organization.听听

Linda was an inspirational leader who consistently broke through ceilings of bias and inequity that existed across the defense industry. As a woman of color, she was often underestimated, which she used as fuel to propel her rise through the executive levels of the organizations she worked.听 听

Linda鈥檚 drive, intellect and savvy business acumen were impossible to ignore. She consistently built strong organizations, actively developed current and future leaders and always delivered on her commitments to the organization. Her lead-by-example approach was contagious, and I was proud to be part of her team.听听

My time working with Linda heavily shaped my approach to becoming a leader and has had an enduring influence on my leadership journey in the 10+ years since last working with her. I would go as far as to say, Linda is perhaps a reason I joined 91快活林 Federal 鈥� welcoming the opportunity to work for another industry trailblazer, 91快活林 Federal President and CEO , who represents many of the same leadership qualities and successes as Linda.听听

How AI improves operations on NOAA GOES-R weather and environmental satellites

On June 25, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) launched the fourth and final satellite of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES)-R program. This latest launch, known as GOES-U, continued and extended the program鈥檚 objective of serving as the Western hemisphere鈥檚 most sophisticated system for observing weather and monitoring the environment, according to the World Meteorological Organization. Beginning with the first GOES-R launch in November 2016, these satellites have provided NOAA with advanced imagery and atmospheric measurements, real-time mapping of lightning activity, space weather observations and other services based on an extensive range of data collected by an array of sensors and imagers.

GOES-R satellites provide the critical data needed to detect and monitor environmental conditions that can potentially threaten the well-being of everyone in the Western Hemisphere. It has dramatically improved our ability to predict weather conditions on earth and in space, an especially critical capability given the severe weather events of recent years. Not only does GOES data help meteorologists predict and track events like hurricanes and tornadoes, it is also used for other essential purposes such as identifying lightning strikes that are likely to ignite wildfires, determining when and where air quality alerts are needed, planning air routes to reduce flight delays and many other important functions that affect us all every day.

A lesser-known aspect of the program is how it has leveraged new and innovative applications for artificial intelligence and machine learning to extend the mission life of satellites. By leveraging the power of AI and an application called the Advanced Intelligent Monitoring System (AIMS), the GOES-R team has successfully improved both operational efficiency and mission resilience.

Given how much we all rely on the data produced by GOES satellites, it鈥檚 easy to see how important it is for NOAA to be made aware of any issues that might prevent GOES-R satellite sensors and imagers from collecting and sharing data. Each day, the GOES satellites collect tremendous amounts of data 鈥� an amount impossible for humans to analyze in a timely manner. AIMS rapidly analyzes the data and provides actionable information to those responsible for the operations, health and safety of the GOES systems. AIMS鈥檚 AI capabilities allow it to detect any data pattern changes and predict failures based on those pattern changes over time.

Already deployed in space on GOES-R, the AIMS AI tool improves satellite up time through its ability to quickly detect and predict anomalies in satellite systems and allow maintenance teams to take action to address potential issues before they impact system availability.

AIMS can identify anomalies in a satellite鈥檚 activity and perform root cause analyses and repairs in a matter of minutes or hours where it previously took engineers days. And by identifying these anomalies before something goes wrong, we can minimize the downtime that would have been required for the satellite to go into safe mode to be repaired.

The system currently tracks about 1,800 satellite telemetry points for possible anomalies for each satellite. For example, AIMS may detect a heat sensor unexpectedly turning off or an engine firing faster or slower than it should.

AIMS has already proven effective in monitoring the Advanced Baseline Imager, the primary Earth imaging instrument on the GOES-R satellites. The system looks for anomalies in data that indicate detectors are not performing correctly due to factors such as radiation or space weather. AIMS can determine which detectors were impacted and determine whether to turn them off or to reset and recalibrate them.

NOAA is also testing the same software for pattern recognition with other types of data such as engineering telemetry. And because its machine learning algorithms are plug-and-play components, AIMS may eventually be used in applications well beyond its original deployment.

At a time when AI seems poised to take over the world, its use in a program that has for years protected countless lives in the Western hemisphere proves that new technology can indeed serve humanity鈥檚 interests in crucial ways.

Zhenping Li is an engineer fellow at 91快活林 Federal, a contractor that has performed work on behalf of NOAA and other space agencies. He has more than 25 years of experience working in the aerospace industry with expertise in developing machine learning solutions for space missions and algorithm development for satellite instrument data processing.

This includes handling large-scale network designs and deployments for medical networks, maintaining existing infrastructures, and planning for future integrated network engineering support. Additionally, the team will consolidate service infrastructure support functions into a secure single entity under the DHA.

Navy Combat Systems interface with many systems that are rapidly changing 鈥� often at a faster rate than is possible to fully integrate with the existing architecture without expensive redesign and time-consuming testing. For this challenge, the NSWCDD was seeking a highly adaptable interface approach that could support the dynamic systems environment onboard Navy ships.

Thirteen teams competed for the $250,000 prize, provided by NavalX. With deep expertise in the field of radar data management and software development, the 91快活林 Federal team created an extremely fast and flexible web-based visualization environment that provides a clear view of the current situational environment for Navy personnel onboard a ship.

91快活林 Federal鈥檚 team included John Frankel, Lu Verissimo and Orest Ukrainsky. 鈥淥ur solution was made to be flexible. Using standard software and coded files, our solution presents the information in a coherent fashion on the TACSIT Display (or similar platforms),鈥� said Frankel, 91快活林 Federal product software developer and lead on this project.

91快活林 Federal鈥檚 solution used both Cloud and native solutions, and the team analyzed telemetry data as part of the display.

鈥淭his set of flexible tools and scripts helped us manipulate, analyze and parse out important data to create an enhanced operational environment for our Naval fleet,鈥� Frankel continued. 鈥淥ur microservice-based application can quickly identify the location of nearby friendly or enemy vessels, missiles, or other units, accurately classify them, and give operators a more complete view of their current tactical environment. It also provides a map-based capability to geographically pinpoint the location of our ship in relationship to its surroundings.鈥�
